I still have fond memories of my dad walking me through the safety steps and the row by row method of mowing the lawn. I don’t even remember how old I was. I started on our old, nasty Sears push mower. Later, we got a rider lawn mower! I remember getting in trouble for treating it more like a go cart! So what’s your memory of your dad teaching you to mow the lawn and what was that first mower? Lawn Boy? Toro? Push? Rider? Was it one of those old school, manual, motorless mowers? Tweet
read moreIn this episode of Radio Dad with Mike Austin, Mike talks with his friend, Scott Long (comedian and writer for Fox Sports) about being on the road doing stand-up comedy and being an older dad. read moreWith Summer on the way, youth baseball and softball has already started. we here and read stories every year about dads who get way too aggressive in the bleachers. From yelling at the umpire to openly criticizing the coach to flat out yelling and over coaching their sons & daughters from the stands, dads (and some moms) can get carried away. These actions, I have to believe, come mostly from dads trying to get the best experience for their son or daughter, but sometimes it can come from a need to live their own youth through their...
read moreWhen I was a kid, seemed like we all had some sort of a fort, an away place we could pretend to be superheroes or fighting off the enemy…..like some of our dads did in Korea, WWII or Viet Nam. These “forts” were usually just some scrap wood and brush, stacked, nailed and piled up to make a shelter of some kind. A few of my friends went the extra mile to create and build treehouses. Now keep in mind these were the days before giant home improvement stores with entire sections of outdoor, pre-fab, easy to construct,...
read moreI just watched this video of Tim Tebow at his press conference with the Jets. Notice he dressed up for the occasion. Dad, if you’re tired of watching your sons and even daughters show up for special events dressed like they’re ready for a day at the park or beach or like they just don’t care because “it’s comfortable” or “this is ME” or “I don’t like to get dressed up”. Think about most sports figures even the play by play and commentators on TV, they’re all dressed...
read moreMy youngest son, Joseph, is smitten with all things Medieval. He has a collection of knights on horses, a sword and helmet (toys of course, the sword is foam rubber) and a shield, he sometimes uses the knight name “Sir Carter” (don’t know how he came up with that one) and he and I made a small castle for his toy knights (check back here for a video on how to make a castle out of cardboard boxes…soon!). So I’ve been thinking about those days of old and us dads. I like to think of our house as our castle. It’s been...
read moreI’m just reading an article about an old topic we’ve covered a couple of times here at radiodad.com and on our radio show nationwide. Several years ago I was made aware of a sick game then middle school kids were playing called “The Choking Game” or “Pass Out” or “Space Monkey”, whatever you call it…it’s deadly! The “Choking Game” is played individually or in groups and consists of cutting off the intake of air and/or blood flow to the brain for just enough time to...
